National Health (Highly Specialised Drugs Program) Special Arrangement Amendment (Nurse Practitioner Prescribing—PBS Nurse Practitioner Prescribing Review) Instrument 2026

LAW · in force

What the video says

This one's a health instrument that amends the rules for the PBS Highly Specialised Drugs program.

Together with a companion instrument, it adds authorised nurse practitioners as prescribers for 22 listed drugs from 1 November.

They cover conditions like cystic fibrosis, transplant rejection and iron overload.

For most, that's continuing treatment only, with care shared with a specialist. For three iron overload drugs, it may also be initial treatment, with a medical practitioner sharing care.

Non-specialist doctors may also prescribe those three without the old extra requirements.

It implements recommendations from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee.

It was registered on 27 October, and starts on 1 November.

Worth a read if you work in health, or use the PBS.

The voiceover, as written in the video’s script.
