Health apps and your healthcare identifier

LAW · in force

What the video says

Your health app may soon handle your healthcare identifier. What rules come with that?

The Healthcare Identifiers Amendment Health Technology and Other Matters Regulations 2026 start in stages.

A healthcare identifier is a number that uniquely identifies you.

From 1 February 2027, the Act lets health apps and wearables handle yours, with consent.

These rules add conditions: conformance, validation, and destroying it when consent is withdrawn.

Breach one: a civil penalty of up to 50 penalty units.

Government e-prescription services can also handle identifiers.

The count: two start dates, three conditions, 50 penalty units.
