The Digital Duty of Care

Bill · not law

Senate committee report due 20 Nov 2026

What the video says

The Digital Duty of Care is a bill, introduced on 15 October. It is not law. A Senate committee reports on 20 November.

Senator Michaelia Cash says: “censorship dressed up as online safety.” Minister Anika Wells says: “We are not controlling free speech.”

Today, the 2021 Online Safety Act gives the eSafety Commissioner removal powers, plus industry codes. The bill would add one platform duty, replacing the codes 12 months after Royal Assent.

If passed, the maximum penalty is 60,000 penalty units. The government says that is up to $109.2 million.

Nothing is decided. The Coalition says it cannot support it. The Guardian reports the Greens are broadly supportive.

I'm not taking a side. If you sat on that committee, what would you ask first?

The voiceover, as written in the video’s script.
