What the video says
Is Australia's under-16 social media ban about to be tested in the High Court?
The law says age-restricted social media platforms must take reasonable steps to stop Australian children under 16 having accounts.
Messaging, online games, education and health services are excluded.
The duty started 10 December 2025. It's on platforms. eSafety says there are no penalties for kids or parents.
Reddit and the Digital Freedom Project argue the law impermissibly burdens the implied freedom of political communication.
The Commonwealth says the burden is justified to protect under-16s from credible risks of serious harm, and disputes the Digital Freedom Project's standing.
The hearing is listed for 3 and 4 November in Canberra. The court hasn't ruled, and the law is in force.
