What the video says
Is pepper spray legal in Victoria? For most people, no.
The Control of Weapons Regulations 2021 list pepper spray devices as prohibited weapons.
Section 5AA of the Control of Weapons Act makes it an offence to possess, use or carry one without an exemption or approval.
The penalty: up to 240 penalty units, or two years.
Victoria Police says exemptions cover government staff, like police and prison officers, and self-defence is not a lawful excuse.
MP David Limbrick's petition has 3,340 signatures. He says he'd bring a bill if re-elected. A government spokesperson told Nine these are not laws the Government is considering.
I'm not taking a side. If you could change one thing about it, what would it be?
